The University of the Virgin Islands community is grieving the loss of its third president, Dr. Orville E. Kean. Kean’s leadership transformed the institution during his 12-year tenure from 1990 to 2002.
Dr. Kean passed away recently, leaving a legacy marked by significant developments in the university and territory. UVI’s current president, Dr. Safiya George, expressed deep condolences on behalf of the university community, highlighting Dr. Kean’s dedication to education and compassionate leadership. “The University and the territory have lost a great intellectual, a man with a warm and generous heart, and a visionary leader,” said Dr. George, extending her sympathies to Dr. Kean’s family.
From Professor Kean to President Kean
Dr. Orville E. Kean’s contributions to UVI were pivotal. Under his presidency, the university recovered from the devastating impacts of Hurricanes Hugo and Marilyn, implementing significant infrastructural improvements that modernized the institution. Among his most notable achievements were planning and completing significant capital projects, including establishing a research and extension center on St. Croix, new residence halls on both campuses and the highly regarded Sports and Fitness Center, inaugurated in 2001.
His innovative vision positioned UVI as a leader in economic development within the Virgin Islands. Notably, he secured legislative approval for the Research and Technology Park, which has attracted nearly 70 companies and substantially benefits the local economy. Through these initiatives, Dr. Kean paved the way for future growth and opportunities for UVI students, including a generous $5 million donation from entrepreneur Kiril Sokoloff that helped launch an entrepreneurship program.
Dr. Kean began his journey at UVI as a mathematics professor in 1966 and quickly ascended through various roles. His extensive service was recognized when UVI’s St. Thomas campus was renamed the “Dr. Orville E. Kean Campus” in 2021, following legislation sponsored by Sen. Myron Jackson.
Plans for commemorative arrangements will be announced soon. In honor of Dr. Kean, donations can be made to the Orville Kean Endowment.
