SWAC women’s basketball’s loss is a gain for University of Alabama basketball as Zaay Green has made her choice.
The former UAPB star is headed to her fourth school, committing to the University of Alabama on Saturday as a graduate transfer.
“God got me,” Green posted on Instagram with a photo of her in an Alabama uniform. “Committed.”
Green’s move comes roughly one week after her former coach, Dawn Thornton, resigned from her gig at Arkansas-Pine Bluff and headed to Alabama A&M. There was some speculation as to whether or not Green would follow her coach after she hit the transfer portal on Monday. She shut that down later in the week— citing events that took place during the year — and announced she would be actively pursuing what she felt was best for her.
The former Power Five player had a stellar showing this past season at UAPB, averaging 16.7 points per game. She averaged 19.2 points per game in non-conference play, scoring better than 20 points six times, including 26 and 25 points against Oregon State and Oregon. She helped UAPB beat Arkansas for the first time in school history earlier this season.
The Duncanville, Texas native was a five-star recruit, ranked No. 10 overall and No. 2 as a guard in the HoopGurlz espnW Top 100. Green started her career at Tennessee where she finished the 2018-19 season with an SEC All-Freshman Team selection as she averaged 9.6 points while hauling in four rebounds and dishing out 2.3 assists per game in 32 games and was named SEC Freshman of the Week twice.
Her sophomore season was cut short in 2019-2020 and she transferred to Texas A&M. Green spent one season at Texas A&M where she averaged 2.9 points per game on a .390 shooting percentage in limited minutes.
Now Green will take her talents to the University of Alabama.
