Howard women’s hoops gets commitment from SEC transfer

Coming off a season in which they fell shy of a MEAC title, the Howard women’s basketball team is loading up for a run at the championship with a marquee acquisition from the transfer portal.

Former Kentucky forward Zennia Thomas has announced she has committed to play for the Bison.

In two seasons with Kentucky, Thomas played 17 games in limited action, averaging 1.4 points per game.

Through seven games this past year, the former Wildcat was dismissed from the program in January for reasons undisclosed to the public.

“We hold our players to a high standard at Kentucky,” said Kentucky head coach Kyra Elzy regarding Thomas’ departure from the team. “Unfortunately, when someone does not consistently meet those standards, I have to make the tough decision to dismiss them from the program.”

She entered the transfer portal in March, making the announcement in an Instagram post followed by a lengthy statement addressing her departure from Kentucky.

“I’ve had time to reflect, redirect, and grow from this experience,” said Thomas. “I’m focused and ready to build on my gift and talents. I am fully committed to the path God has in front of me. This unexpected journey has inspired a desire for personal awareness and a fresh start. I am extremely grateful for the exposure and knowledge I received at the University of Kentucky. I look forward to being a welcomed addition to my future coaches and teammates.”
