Delaware State shot 50 percent from 3-point range on the way to a 73-60 win against the Grambling State Tigers at Mohegan Sun Arena Thursday in the Chris Paul HBCU Challenge.
The Hornets (6-6) had four players score in double figures, led by Robert Smith, who had 16 points and four assists. Martaz Robinson added 15 points, six rebounds, and two steals, and Muneer Newton helped out with a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Delaware State out-rebounded Grambling 36-33 in Thursday’s game, led by Newton’s 10 boards. The Hornets also grabbed 13 offensive rebounds and scored 14 second-chance points.
The Delaware State defense held Grambling shooters to only 37.9 percent from the field, including 16.7 percent from three-point range.
Delaware State started off strong, putting together a 29-25 lead heading into halftime. Delaware State did most of its first-half damage in the paint, scoring 16 of its 29 points close to the basket.
Following intermission, Delaware State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 50-43 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Robinson’s three, to grow the lead to 55-43 with 7:06 to go in the contest.
The Hornets kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 73-60 win. Delaware State made the most of five offensive rebounds to tack on eight second-chance points out of 44 total in the period.
