When it comes to hitmakers in the 1990s, female R&B groups became defined by the foundation set forth by a chart-topping trio we’ve come to know and love today as TLC.
The musical journey that Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and Rozonda “Chilli’ Thomas came together to embark on with their 1992 debut still resonates strong with fans across the globe over 30 years later.
Thankfully, we were blessed with the latter queen’s presence here at “My First Time” this week to share some magic from those early days.

Chilli gave us a quick recap of TLC’s first performance while still working the “Chitlin Circuit,” a culturally-recognized era in the South and Midwest where new Black artists experienced their first opportunities at performing live. Chilli and the girls were no different, paying their dues throughout the early ’90s in order to get on a level that soon made all three of them R&B icons.
