Blake Harper is the top HBCU freshman basketball player right now. What makes him special?

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference revealed its men’s basketball weekly accolades, where Howard University freshman standout Blake Harper won his 11th consecutive Rookie of the Week award.

Harper averaged 22.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in the matchups versus Coppin State and Bowie State.

On Monday, Jan. 13, the D.C. native notched a double-double (25 points and 12 boards) while going a perfect 12-for-12 at the foul line against CSU. Two days later, on Jan. 15, he registered 19 points and eight rebounds against BSU.

This season, Harper leads the MEAC in scoring at 18.8 points per game and has grabbed a league-high 6.9 rebounds per game.

“All the sacrifice and the hours has gone into this. It really kind of reflects on my team, helping me get out there. It makes it easier on me. Have my guys out there with me, so I thank them for helping me with my success,” Harper told 7News.

Howard coach Kenneth Blakeney said Harper’s play has been key to the Bison staying competitive during a period of injury for the team.

“Blake’s presence, especially with the number of injuries that we’ve had right now this year, has been a blessing in disguise. Certainly, I understood how good Blake was coming into the season, and to see him kind of fulfill and reach his level of play right now has been great.”
