Amarr Knox, CJ Hines, and TJ Madlock combined to score 63 points to lead Alabama State to an 82-81 win over SWAC leader Southern on Monday.
Knox led the Hornets (10-14, 6-5) with 26 points and six assists. Hines added 19 points, and Madlock helped out with 18 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.
Alabama State shared the ball well in Monday’s game, racking up 17 assists on 29 made field goals. Madlock’s six assists led the Hornets.
The Alabama State defense held Southern shooters to only 37.1 percent from the field, including 22.7 percent from three-point range.

After falling behind 36-32, Alabama State went on a 7-0 run with 1:28 left in the first half to take a 39-36 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. Alabama State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 39 points.
Southern took a 70-69 lead before Alabama State went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Hines’ three, to seize a 76-70 lead with 3:13 to go in the contest. The Jaguars narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hornets still held on for the 82-81 win.
