HBCU coach honored with President’s Lifetime Achievement Award

North Carolina Central University men’s basketball coach LeVelle Moton is well known for his work in HBCU basketball and his philanthropy off the court. That work has been recognized and Moton will be honored with the 2024 President’s Lifetime Achievement Award later this fall. Moton was made aware of the honor in a recent letter.

“We want to inform you that your years of dedicated service to this great nation have had an influence in the lives of many. Your life’s work continues to be an influential force around the world,” the letter said in part.

This award program was established by former President George H. Bush under the Points of Light. A third party, Premiere Coalition Partners Association, LLC, is responsible as a certifying organization of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award Program to uphold the guidelines set forth by the Points of Light to award the honorees. Recipients of the award will receive a lifetime pin, a gold medallion, and a letter bearing the signature of President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.

In addition to coaching the men’s basketball team, Moton is highly involved in the community through his “Velle Cares” Foundation. He’s supported back to school events for children as well as events to support single mothers and teachers, showcasing the philanthropy of an HBCU product. Moton not only coaches at NCCU, but he was a star player there in the 1990s as well. He also teamed with a group of local businessmen in Raleigh, North Carolina to create Raleigh Raised Development, which assists with affordable housing developments.

In 2022 RRD announced a joint venture to revitalize the Heritage Park Community in Raleigh. Moton had this to say at the time.

“Heritage Park has been a staple in Raleigh since the 1970s, and we’re excited to be able to contribute to the process of preserving and updating this important Raleigh community,” said RRD partner, LeVelle Moton. “It’s our goal to ensure that the vision and voices of existing and future residents are incorporated into the design and construction of the redeveloped community. We hope that residents and the Raleigh community will keep their eyes open for upcoming opportunities to provide their feedback during this process.”

The ceremony to honor Moton and other recipients in Durham County will be on October 5, 2024 at the historical North Carolina Central University Student Center from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm.
