Alabama A&M University Women’s Basketball Coach Margaret Richards Steps Down

Alabama A&M University Director of Athletics, Dr. Paul A. Bryant, announced Tuesday that women’s basketball head coach Margaret Richards has stepped down to pursue other opportunities.

“We are grateful for the dedication and effort that Coach Richards has shown during her tenure with the Alabama A&M University women’s basketball program,” Bryant said.

“Her commitment to our student-athletes has been unwavering, and we wish her the best in her future endeavors.”

During her eight seasons in Huntsville, Richards has compiled a 97-125 record, with six trips to the SWAC Tournament. In addition, she compiled a 69-70 mark in conference play. During the 2021-2022 season, Richards elevated the program to a second-place finish in the conference, notching a program-best 13 conference wins.

This season, Richards’s squad won 15 games, including going 10-4 at the AAMU Event Center, and had non-conference victories over Tennessee Tech, UAH, North Alabama, South Carolina State, and Chicago State.

She coached All-SWAC Freshman of the Year Kaylah Turner and All-Second Team performer Amiah Simmons. Notably, Richards is the only coach in program history not only to sweep rival Alabama State but also to do it twice.

A national search will begin immediately, the school said in a statement.
