Just under a year after the release of his critically acclaimed Unruly album, which has amassed over 300 million global streams, and amidst rumours of his “retirement” swirling the zeitgeist, renowned African music icon and Nigerian rap legend OLAMIDE is back with a surprise new EP titled IKIGAI / 生き甲斐, VOL.1. The EP title, derived from the Japanese concept of ‘ikigai’, which means “a reason for living“, serves as a thematic foundation for the project, where Olamide explores the intersections of passion, profession, and purpose. Throughout the EP, Olamide reaffirms his position as a trailblazer in global music, delivering on innovation and deep resonance yet again.

2. Elmiene – Light Work

“Light Work” sees Elmiene celebrating the ease of a relationship when people find themselves on the same page. It’s a dedication to a love that materialized during a moment of hopelessness and redefined happiness – a love worth doing anything to hold onto.
 
Elmiene continues to establish his position at the forefront of contemporary soul with each new release. Chuckyy – the buzzing 18-year-old Chicago native and protégé of hometown hero Lil Durk – releases his debut mixtape Tweak Til The End today via OTF/Santa Anna Label Group.

Chuckyy’s steady stream of singles and freestyles over the past year have garnered increasing buzz from fans and industry alike, as his breakout track “Me Vs Me” has racked nearly 4 million YouTube views in just a matter of weeks. Other standouts include “Turn My Snake Up,” and last week’s “Devil Hours,” which peaked at #27 trending on YouTube upon release.

Known for his over-the-top, boastful, often macabre punchlines over haunting, skeletal production, Chuckyy’s freestyles have been making noise as well. His hysterical, ‘Slow Jamz’-sampling “Veeze Flow” freestyle from On The Radar has amassed over 6 million views on TikTok, while the bizarre “Hear My Chains” freestyle from On The Ringg caught the eye of Pitchfork’s Alphonse Pierre, who noted the tracks “ominous church bells, stuttering Michigan-style drums, and the sound of rattling chains that feel like wind chimes on a stormy night,” and praised “Chuckyy’s congested voice and ahead-of-the-beat flow only make his macabre raps that much more sinister.”

4. JEMS! – CREEPIN

Today JEMS!, the collaborative project between Oakland born singer, songwriter, and rapper Elujay and Baltimore-bred producer J.Robb, release their new single “CREEPIN” and companion visual from their new album, GEMS IN THE CORNERSTORE II, out September 20th via drink sum wtr (Secretly). “CREEPIN” showcases the street-soul shuffle of the record with smooth hooks, trailing harmonies, and a laid-back ‘90s pop bend. The track was recorded with Elujay’s live band in hometown of Oakland and was born from a collaboration with Bay-area producer Hokage Simon. Coupled with the duo’s kick off track, “FLIGHTS”, that’s brimming with an insatiable blend of R&B, dance, and reggae, “CREEPIN” thoroughly captures the sprawling, kaleidoscopic output that lines the multi-faceted new GEMS IN THE CORNERSTORE II. The album features collaborations with beloved artists including Amaria, Chase Shakur, Louis Culture, and Rae Khalil, bringing to life the dynamic nature of each artist for a project that feels pleasantly familiar yet completely unique and exhilarating.

The by-product of a profound friendship years in the making, GEMS IN THE CORNERSTORE II is an expansive body of work from two world-class artists understanding where their strengths meet and precisely what constitutes a desired vibe. Inspired by their shared immersion in UK nightlife, the album houses a collection of songs that encapsulate the African diaspora which has been beautifully fostered within the walls of the London club scene. Sonically, it pulls from the sounds, artists and eras that have long inspired the duo as well as their shared Caribbean heritage, ranging from old-school R&B and hip-hop to Lovers Rock and dancehall to contemporary indie, ambient, and the many innovative styles they’ve encountered in the UK. 

They titled their debut project GEMS IN THE CORNERSTORE (released in 2020 on Soulection Records) because the phrase conjured “a kind of urban diamond in the rough,” says Elujay; the feeling of finding something unexpected in the melting pot of a city, an allegory that’s even more apt for its follow-up. This new body of work was recorded largely in person across sessions in Los Angeles, Oakland, London, and New York, infused with a vibrancy for life and a global sensibility. The result is an irresistible “feel-good record,” as J.Robb put it, by a duo whose shared love for music and deep admiration for each other remains at the core of their art. All artwork for this project was created by renowned visual artist Frank Dorrey who has produced striking imagery and artwork for Steve Lacy, Noname, Aminé, and brands like Mowalola to name a few.

“One of my favorite songs I’ve made to date. ‘CREEPIN’ was me trying to write a pop song for a big artist . I realized that I should keep it when I showed J.Robb because he reacted so viscerally. We got together with some of my bandmates and put our spin on it. Later on I realized it was kind of like a sister track to my song ‘Ratrace’ with the UK street soul bounce .”

5. Diplo & Mau P ft. Gunna – Receipts

Today, Diplo and international house sensation Mau P unveil a collaborative new single, “Receipts,” featuring acclaimed rapper Gunna—listen HERE. The genre-defying track harnesses the essence of each artist’s individual style, delivering a new sound uniquely in a category of its own. 

The result of several sessions preparing for their b2b set at Coachella’s new dance music stage Quasar in April of this year, “Receipts” signaled the onset of an authentic personal and creative partnership for Diplo and Mau P. The pair first unleashed the track during the four-hour performance, marking not only Mau P’s Coachella debut and the duo’s first b2b but also the first time the collaborators met in person. The track has since become a fixture in both artists’ individual sets around the world.

“‘Receipts’ came to life as Wes and I were preparing for our b2b Coachella set which was also my debut performance at the festival,” Mau P says. “We had been talking for hours about music and our various influences, after which Wes asked me the obvious question – ‘Should we try to create a song together that we can play at Coachella?’ He had recently done a session with Gunna and gave me an acapella to mess around with. One night during Miami Music Week, I came home from a show feeling pretty hyped up, opened my laptop and landed on the first version of this track. From there, Wes and I went back and forth to nail it, and eventually premiered ‘Receipts’ at Coachella.”

Over the course of a 20-year career that began with his now-legendary Philly club night Hollertronix, Diplo has collaborated with the world’s biggest stars and toured the world over. Born in Mississippi and raised in Florida, he and his era-defining labels Mad Decent and Higher Ground continue to champion genres and artists from around the world, and further ventures include a publishing company and various book, film and TV projects. The now thirteen-time Grammy nominee is also a member of the iconic Major Lazer, one third of LSD—the psychedelic supergroup with Sia and Labrinth whose debut album has been streamed over 3 billion times—and half of Silk City with Mark Ronson—whose Platinum-certified, Grammy-winning “Electricity” with Dua Lipa topped charts worldwide. His latest releases include a string of well-received Higher Ground singles, last year’s Diplo Present Thomas Wesley: Chapter 2—Swamp Savant, his second album as country persona Thomas
Wesley, and 2022’s Diplo, his first full length album of electronic music in 18 years.

6. Sinego – Alterego (Deluxe)

Colombian producer, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist Sinego has unveiled the deluxe version of his acclaimed debut album, Alterego. Building on the previously-released daytime-ready “El Día” (The Day) installment, Alterego (Deluxe) introduces “La Noche” (The Night) – club-ready versions that explore the nighttime side of tracks from its predecessor, alongside five remixes. Each track delves into regional genres from various Latin countries, expertly blended with house and techno production. The focus track, ‘El Ratón’ (La Noche)’, is a nighttime reimagining of the collaboration with YoSoyMatt & Millo.

Alterego (Deluxe) is an auditory journey immersing listeners in the richly textured cultures of Latin America through Sinego‘s innovative production. By blending regional samples and traditional folk influences, this project takes listeners on a journey through underrepresented countries in dance music, including Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Cuba, the artist’s home country of Colombia, and more. Alterego (Deluxe) further explores each nation’s essence, featuring seasoned collaborators from each country, merging regional Latin genres with contemporary dance music.

While creating the album project, Sinego traveled to a different Latin American country for each song, creating a unique experience for all who listen. The deluxe album features nighttime “La Noche” renditions of “El Día” tracks, starting with ‘Benjamín Carrión (La Noche)’ ft. Badwolf, a pulsating indie-dance rendition of the tribute to Ecuador- blending Bolero guitars, house music, and tribal percussion. ‘Boa Noite (La Noche)’ ft. Tonina follows, mixing Samba, a pulsating bassline, and afro-house for a driving atmospheric club rusher. ‘Labios (La Noche)’ takes an atmospheric twist honoring Ecuadorian Boleros and Julio Jaramillo, while ‘Mala (La Noche)’ reinvents Venezuela’s soulful sounds into a pulsing deeper playa-tech track. A new track, ‘El Ritmo (La Noche)’, mixes seductive vocals with hard-hitting dark-disco production for a hypnotic listening experience.

The focus track ‘El Ratón (La Noche)’ ft. YoSoyMatt & Millo revitalizes the iconic song with echoing vocals and organic house elements. The indie-dance-infused ‘Tropicana (La Noche)’ features Cuban vibrancy with PAUZA and Cucu Diamantes. ‘El Malevo (La Noche)’ ft. Kermesse honors Argentina with a deep house flair, flowing into ‘Hueso (La Noche’) ft. Moullinex, an all-new track bridging El Día and La Noche sounds. “La Noche” concludes with ‘Espiral (La Noche)’ ft. Fernando Milagro, transporting listeners to Chile with guitars and profound poetry, creating a hauntingly intoxicating experience.

Additionally, the deluxe version features five new remixes, with Sinego enlisting Portuguese Discotexas co-founder Xinobi, Argentinian duo Kermesse, Toronto-born rising artist French Braids, Latin American folk-blending DJ + producer El Búho, and celebrated Mexican producer YoSoyMatt for the stunning reimaginings. 

When speaking about the album, Sinego states, “On “Alterego” I traveled to every country in Latin America, immersing myself in the unique musical cultures of each place to create a mix of traditional genres from each country and fused them with house music. The result is a rich tapestry of sounds that feels both familiar and innovative. Each track transports you to a different part of Latin America, blending local rhythms and instruments with electronic beats. It’s a celebration of diversity and a testament to the power of musical fusion from the Argentinian tango to the Mexican Boleros. In the album’s deluxe version, I had the opportunity to bring artists like Xinobi, Moullinex and YoSoyMatt as collaborators to give a greater perspective of what fusion means in 2024.”

Sinego’s Alterego project goes beyond music, as the LP release is paired with a travel documentary taking viewers behind the scenes of his travels and creative process in the studio with collaborators such as Xinobi, Moullinex, Pauza, Badwolf, Pahua, Angélica Garcia, YoSoyMatt, and more. In addition to spotlighting Latin musical artists, Sinego also supports other Latin creators in other disciplines, collaborating with Dominican Republic designer Miguel Genao for his album merchandise and shooting with brands such as Mexico Is The Shit and Toro (MX). He’s also performed at the Latin Grammys and serves as the Music Director for W Hotels in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Sinego’s hybrid performances are a masterclass in blending electronic production with live instrumentation, including timbales, cymbals, guitars, trumpet, synths, and vocals- this distinctive approach sets him apart in the dynamic world of dance music. As a leading figure in Latin-flavored dance, he has collaborated with prominent artists such as SOFI TUKKER, Nervo, The Knocks, Bomba Estéreo, Yulia Niko, Xinobi, Moullinex, and El Buho. Committed to showcasing talent and culture from Latin America, Sinego has also been chosen by Apple Music as an official mix curator and is one of only three Latin artists selected to curate an official DJ Mix on Spotify. He also curates the popular Spotify Track IDs playlist in Latin America and hosts “Viajero,” an exclusive mix series on Apple Music dedicated to global Latin-Dance Music.

7. Jourden – Straight, No Chase

Straight No Chase explores Jourden’s growing mastery of her flow and style. 8. SadBoi & Smiley – fashion week

Today, Toronto rapper/singer SadBoi unveiled her new single “Fashion Week,” featuring fellow Toronto artist Smiley. Produced by Grammy-nominated Tay Keith, this track hits just two weeks before New York Fashion Week, showcasing SadBoi’s expensive fashion taste and sharp lyrical wordplay. The track is now available on all digital platforms via LVRN Records. 

The song captures SadBoi’s signature fusion of baile-funk, drill, reggae, dancehall, R&B, and alternative rap with sprinkles of Toronto lingo, staying true to her Canadian roots. The chorus echoes “He want see SadBoi. You’ll see me at fashion week. That’s if you invited. Revenge won’t make sleep. Wipe my tears with racks and Miu Miu on my feet.” 

SadBoi expressed her excitement about the collaboration, saying, “Fashion Week was not just a song I wrote to manifest the day I would actually attend Fashion Week, but also a way I expressed what I was going through at the time in a way I felt would uplift me. I guess you can say I manifested working with Smiley too. I said, “I need a man like Smiley. Someone make this intro, please.” We’ve known each other for years and have always said we would work together, but we just never did. So when I posted the snippet with those lyrics, he hit me up, and we finally made something happen!”

The record is a profound exploration of a personal journey through life’s stages that unfolds like a memoir, each song capturing moments of introspection and revelation.

The second single from Been Loving You, “Makin Bacon” sizzles, echoing the controlled panic that can be felt when striving for perfection while realizing that it can never be reached.

“The heat, the popping grease, the idea of heightening the stakes with a little one underfoot, all together start to tell what it’s like to be a mother and an artist, or any female professional in the world and society we live in,” Annie says. “I wanted to leave the listener wondering, ‘Is she going to burn the house down?’”

As the second-eldest daughter in a large Mormon family – five siblings in all – Annie J has always relied on music to find a sense of belonging. With a childhood spent shuffling around small towns throughout the US, she discovered that art created a deeper understanding of her purpose than what was on the surface. Annie’s family eventually settled on the east side of the Cascade Mountains in Washington State—through it all, she found a constant companion in what was flowing through the speakers of a “dream machine” radio alarm clock her grandfather gifted her. 

The R&B and jazz stylings of Whitney Houston and Nina Simone that Annie gravitated toward swirled with country-soaked powerhouse voices of Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, The Chicks and The Judds that her mother had on repeat. Formally trained in classical music, Annie studied theater in college, which offered a gateway to a wider world—learning to inhabit another viewpoint was a profound experience as an actor and later as a writer. She began to realize her talent for storytelling. In the years since, Annie’s sound has evolved into a singular blend of pop sensibility, soulful expression, and jazz-infused rhythms—she mentions contemporary voices like Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, and Billie Eilish are current influences. 11. Jutes – Vertigo

Ottawa-via-LA rock/pop artist Jutes has released his newest single, “Vertigo.” The track is part of his upcoming sophomore album, Sleepyhead, set for early 2025. With a nostalgic nod to early 2000s pop/punk bands like Deftones and Linkin Park, “Vertigo” starts with a smooth, vibey intro and builds to a powerful, anthemic chorus. 14. Frank Iero – This Song Is A Curse…

Today, multi-hyphenate musician, songwriter, and record producer Frank Iero has announced he will release a deluxe 10-year anniversary edition of his debut studio album, Stomachaches, titled XNauseousX on Friday, August 30.

To commemorate the announcement, he has released a new single “This Song Is A Curse…” out now via BMG. The new album is available to pre-order on limited vinyl exclusively on his website and to pre-save.

Widely recognized as the lead guitarist in My Chemical Romance and L.S. Dunes, Frank Iero launched his solo career with the debut album Stomachaches in 2014. It received rave reviews from Alternative Press, New Noise Magazine, and NME, with Louder calling it “an emotional listen and more of a window into Iero’s mind than any of the mainstream releases he has been involved in before.”

This record’s deluxe edition will boast 12 tracks, including some brand-new songs, live recordings, and covers for fans to enjoy.

“It’s pretty wild having to sit down and think about putting together a 10-year anniversary edition of a record that you originally had zero intentions of releasing. First off, I can’t believe it’s been 10 years, damn time really does fly by. And second, I’m still shocked anyone cares… but I suppose if my original plan was to make a time capsule for my kids to discover, funnily enough, it all kind of worked out. I’ve had a fun time digging through old hard drives, finding recordings, photos, and videos of that time and place. I suppose, in a lot of ways, I’m still that person, but in many cases, I am not. I truly believe that everything we have gone through and experienced gets us to the place where we currently reside, and I honestly wouldn’t change one second of it. ‘XNauseousX’ compiles everything put to tape from the Stomachaches era. From the first song I released as a solo artist, “This Song Is A Curse…,” as well as the first 7 inch release, ‘For Jamia.’ All the way through home-recorded and mixed B-sides and the Cellabration’s entire BBC Maida Vale session. You even get my homemade interpretation of Green Day’s Extraordinary Girl, which was panned by almost all of the internet but remains one of my favorite things I ever made. (Thank you James and Kerrang! for asking me to do this one. I still think the internet was wrong and I was right.) For better or worse this is a time capsule, now fully complete and unearthed. I hope it finds you well, and makes you smile more than it makes you frown.”

Since his debut album was released, Frank Iero has released two additional albums, including Parachutes in 2017 and Barriers in 2019, which Loudwire named one of the 50 Best Rock Albums of that year.

Singer-songwriter Nige has unleashed the official music video for his latest single, “Don’t Cry.” The visual, finds the Washington, D.C. native reflecting on a bad breakup inside a home once occupied by himself and his former lover. The video chronicles the bad moments that took over the relationship and pushed Nige to end it. The song, produced by Supah Mario, is a powerful and emotional entry in Nige’s growing catalog. “Situations / That done changed / Our relationship / I know I’m done / With these games / And how you play me girl,” Nige sings to open the somber record.

“I remember when I first made ‘Don’t Cry,’ I went back home and played it for some of the homies, and they all said it gave them goosebumps,” says Nige about the new record. “That’s kinda when I knew it was going to be a big song that a lot of people could connect with. In conjunction with Leonardo DiCaprio (Appian Way) & Oscar winning-producer Mike Medavoy’s animated feature film “OZi: Voice of the Forest,” Nigerian singer/actress Tiwa Savage (@TiwaSavage) liberates the Diane Warren (@Diane_Warren) written soundtrack single “One Heart (Can Change The World).” Produced and recorded at Realsongs Studios in Los Angeles by multiple Grammy-winner Damon Elliott, the climate change awareness collaboration came into fruition after Diane DM’d Tiwa on social media and personally requested her signature vocals.

“This song touched me with its beautiful words and meaning. What could be simpler than to have kindness, and Diane Warren wrote a song for a beautiful film that reminds us to be compassionate to others and to our earth and toward those who share it. No one can put feelings and meaning to music like Diane Warren and being the voice to ‘One Heart’ means so much,” details the Berklee College of Music alumna when asked about what it was like working with the living legend.

18. Godwin Louis – Psalms and Provers

Louis draws on religious musical traditions around the world, including his Haitian roots, Haiti being where European, African and Native traditions converged to create the roots of jazz. The disc includes gospel and liturgical music from West African Ewe and Beninois sources as well as 16th-century French composer Claude Goudimel (for a beautiful sax-trumpet duet), the Scottish-Anglican hymn “Abide with Me,” and compositions he wrote in collaboration with several ministers, including his late father, the Rev. Marcel Louis — Psalms 23 Part II (I Shall Fear No Evil)” and “Psalms 23 Part III (Surely Goodness and Mercy)”.

Born into a musical family in Harlem of Haitian heritage, Louis was raised in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Maturing on the scene in New Orleans, Boston, New York and beyond, Louis is a composer-arranger-virtuoso soloist who got his start on saxophone at age nine. A Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Saxophone competition finalist, a 2024 Grammy nominee (for arrangements on singer Cécile McLorin Salvant’s Mélusine,), and a Berklee College of Music woodwinds professor, he is a man of devoutly lyrical imagination, as richly demonstrated in Psalms and Proverbs.

With a sax sound as robust, focused and fluid as the finest of his reeds (think Cannonball Adderley, Paquito D’Rivera and Donald Harrison), Louis leads an extraordinary ensemble through a program varied by its themes and formats, including spoken word, chants and choral passages; deft instrumental interplay and stirring African American and Afro-Caribbean rhythms. He takes full advantage of post-bop jazz freedoms, also embracing gospel music tropes, son montuno style, bolero and calypso flourishes (for instance on the track “Collective Bovarysm”).

As he proved in 2019 with his audacious two-CD debut album Global, Louis has a humanist and internationalist perspective, informed by the African diaspora and expressed in his embrace of jazz in its totality — broadly defined — and his service to it as an international ambassador. He’s toured Africa (and is the namesake of a rooftop jazz club in Togo), Europe and China, and also returned to nourish his roots in his Caribbean homeland as founder of the Experience Ayiti, a nonprofit multidisciplinary arts organization offering musical education to and developing leadership skills among Haitian youth.

Core members of Louis’s Global band return for Psalms and Proverbs, including brassman Billy Buss, pianist Axel Tosca, organist Johnny Mercier, drummer Obed Calvaire, percussionist Markus Schwartz, bassist Hogyu Hwang and vocalist Melissa Stylianou. Trinidad-born trumpet star Etienne Charles partners with Louis in the frontline on the opening “Showers of Blessings/Kplolanyuiade” and “Pelo Malo.”

Psalms and Proverbs is also a showcase for vocal-focused tracks featuring the talents of acclaimed world stars. Louis has enlisted both Xiomara Laugart, known as the “Voice of Cuba,” and two-time Grammy Award-nominated artist Lea Lórien. Both appear on “Pelo Malo (Bad Hair),” an uncompromising, at first troubled but ultimately affirming resolution of the complex conversation about hair texture that has plagued generations of Afro-Latino and other Black communities. Louis introduces Lècokpon, a bright Benin artist, and on several tracks Stylianou, a singer-songwriter with five albums as a leader and member of the vocal trio Duchess, harmonizes with Haitian American songstress Pauline Jean (who steps out dramatically on “Psalms 6”).

“Whether in Africa or the Americas, the hymn and the playing of music are central to worship and praise in any number of religious traditions,” said Louis. “This album explores that nexus and carries on the tradition of sacred music and its influence on jazz — the music steeped in the sounds of West Africa, the Caribbean, the United States and Europe — in what I hope are new and exciting ways for audiences.”

Simultaneously, he continues to give back at every turn, uplifting Detroit. On the eve of Mother’s Day this year, he donated to COTS’ Peggy’s Place, covering the security deposits for three families to move out of COTS’ emergency shelter. Detroit-based COTS is a private, non-profit organization that provides emergency shelter, supportive and affordable housing, and comprehensive support services for families experiencing and at risk of experiencing homelessness. Last year, he hosted a special giveaway at Detroit Coney Island, supplying over 400 free meals and gaming consoles to celebrate the arrival of Controversy.

The album comes after Poppa’s dealing with depression where rekindling his relationship with God got him through and in the booth. He came to terms with where he is in life and started penning songs across a variety of sounds, to show the industry that he can hold his own with the best. Often an orator for life on the streets, it was important to him to feature fellow Jacksonville artists to the booth for this new project, too. Spinabenz, another immensely popular rapper from the same neighborhood, is someone who Poppa thinks deserves the spotlight as well because of his talent — so he’s on the LP providing that hometown connection. 

One of the most emotional songs on the project is “Letter To Jook,” a track to a close friend and mentor who motivated him never to quit. He called Poppa frequently to check on him and inspire him to keep rapping. His presence inspires the whole project, but is specifically called out on the track. 

That’s not to say that the entire album is centered around sentimentality. There’s a full spectrum of songs here, with some featuring more of a club bounce, and others that you usually don’t hear Poppa rap in. The project started as a collaboration between Zay and UK producer Kwes Darko in 2020 but was put on hold by the COVID-19 pandemic and then by Zay’s near-fatal car wreck in May 2021, which left him unable to walk and in a state of amnesia for months. After an extensive healing process, Zay returned to VIP with a fresh perspective, and now he’s back and ready to share the project with the world.

Across VIP, Zay’s powerfully gritty voice and ear for industrial, bass-heavy production create a singular and unpredictable sound, elevated by features from A$AP Rocky, Denzel Curry, JPEGMafia, Kenny Mason, and Mike Dimes. Act three brings in jealousy from rumours of the past partner moving on to someone new.
