BATON ROUGE, La. — The Southern University Athletics community is mourning the death of cross country and track and field student-athlete Tommy Thomas Jr.
Thomas, who was home for the summer, was returning for his sophomore season on the cross country and track and field teams, passed away earlier today.
Thomas was from Lafayette, Louisiana, and prepped at Northside High School. He majored in therapeutic recreation and leisure studies while at Southern.
“Our Southern University Athletics family is devastated over the sudden death of Tommy Thomas Jr.,” said Roman Banks, Director of Athletics at Southern University. “We extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all who loved him.”
Southern is working to ensure both student-athletes and athletics staff have emotional and mental support as they process and grieve.
