Former SEC QB commits to HBCU after Houston stint

Former SEC commit and University of Houston football player Lucas Coley is headed to an HBCU close to home.

The former four-star quarterback from San Antonio has committed to Prairie View A&M, according to his social media.

Coley played his high school ball at Cornerstone Christian where he threw for better than 1,300 yards in ten games while tossing 13 touchdowns and one interception as a senior in 2020. Also adept at using his feet, Coley rushed for nearly 500 yards and 11 scores as a senior. He accounted for over 3,000 yards of total offense and 30 touchdowns in his junior season in 2019.

Lucas Coley was ranked as a four-star by ESPN, while receiving a three-star rating from 247Sports. ESPN had him rated as the ninth-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the 2021 class. He had nearly three dozen offers from schools in the ACC, Big Ten and SEC. He received offers from Arkansas, Tennessee, Illinois, Virginia Tech, Louisville, Yale, and Vanderbilt.

He ultimately chose to commit to Arkansas, where he was an early enrollee in Jan. 2021. He spent one season in the SEC school before transferring to Houston. He appeared in two games as a redshirt freshman in 2022, appearing in three games. Coley appeared in just one game in 2023, playing a handful of snaps on punt return.

Now he will look to take the reins of the SWAC West champions, who thought they had an answer at quarterback earlier this year with Clifton McDowell.
